I have to say, I have worked for some terrifically talented managers, who cared deeply for me as a person, for my career, and for my family. I remain in touch with many of them. Maybe they showed care for my human person as a way to get ever more out of me, but I never once perceived it that way. Quite the contrary, I found them deeply sympathetic with me in my work role and in my life beyond work. They seemed profoundly aware that I had yearnings, hopes, needs, fears and joys that had absolutely nothing to do with my job. They were rooting, and are still rooting, for Russell Smith the human being.
