You're not shouting into a void, that's just your inner boss talking
Visiting the Making Mind podcast to talk writing, story design, and coping with the lonely spells of creating
Hello again, still from hiatus! Pausing the backlog of podcasts and SlackerFest posts (TOTALLY not because they’re not ready…why do you ask?) to point you to a very nice conversation I had with
’ Keith Hayden to inaugurate his new podcast, Making Mind. While he does manage to force me to define “workhumper” AND we get a few requisite dunks on Gary Vee, the bulk of the conversation ended up being about writing, character design, and the creative process. You’ll get a more thorough glimpse into my reasoning behind SlackerFest and how I approach large projects such as writing Sirena’s story—including how I’m trying to use the internet to make the process less lonely this time around. You’ll also hear more about Keith’s own projects and creative process, something we didn’t have the chance to touch upon that much back when he was the inaugural Friend With Big Quit Energy.
It was an honor to kick off Keith’s new ‘cast, and I encourage you to follow him as I’m sure he’ll have even better guests and takes on shows to come.
Keith and L. Vago -- this was a wonderful interview! Your exploration on why there are so few female slackers (or female slacker movie directors) was great. It's intriguing to me -- is that a result of society's expectations? Culture's? Simply 'nature' -- ie, there's almost something unnatural about the notion of a female slacker. I recall my dad going to a co-worker's son's career day at school. This was 5th grade or so. My dad returned and said ALL the girls were engaged, asked smart questions, wanted to know more about him and his career. Dad said almost no boy asked a question or seemed very engaged. Like Keith, I am really excited to read Sirena's story.
L. Vago -- I really appreciated your point about inner rewards from writing vs outer rewards. Maybe writers (artists?) are wired to care more about inner rewards than outer rewards?
Anyway, I love interviews that raise issues I have never considered before. This was one. Thank you both!
Thanks for the recommendation!
Looking forward to hearing more about Sirena's story soon.
